Laura and Cedric Victorious in Sunday's $150,000 CN U.S. Open CSIO 4* in Wellington!
Laura guided Happy Hill Farm's Cedric to the win in Sunday's
$150,000 CN U.S. Open CSIO 4* over fifty-five starters and six in
the jump off at WEF.
The difficult course of 14 numbered obstacles and 17 jumping efforts, designed by Guilherme Jorge of Brazil did not see a clear round until the 28th horse in the jumping order. The demanding, twisty eight jump short course ended with a long gallop home, and Laura took full advantage of Cedric's agility and speed to cross the finish line in a blazing 48.01 seconds. Laura said that she "had never gone that fast on him EVER" and it was terrifying, but Cedric was fantastic! This is only the second grand prix that the pair has won, since Laura is usually riding Cedric in Nation's Cups and selection trials. Laura said that "for a change, it was really fun to get to run flat out and win a class". Laura is thrilled with the win and Cedric's performance: "I am so pleased with him. He's come such a long way over the past year. He's such a pleasure to ride. He doesn't have the issues he used to with the water and the walls. Now, he gets right down to business. I just wish Peter had been there to see him go". Congratulations to Laura, Cedric, Happy Hill Farm, and the rest of the team! |

Laura and Cedric Rise to Top of USEF WEG Selection Trials
With two clear rounds and a 3rd place finish in Saturday night's
$75,000 Fidelity Investments Grand Prix CSI 2* at WEF, Laura and

trials. Laura and Cedric, along with Lauren Hough and Quick Study,
are the only two horse rider combinations with a spotless record, a
score of zero, going into trial #3.
Cedric jumped the difficult track of seventeen jumping efforts with ease, and Laura went for the careful clear in the jump off and got it, earning them 3rd place overall. Laura talks about how great Cedric feels: “I’ve never felt him better – ever. He’s more seasoned now, now he’s doing most of the work and I’m just along for the ride". Laura and Happy Hill Farm's Cedric clear in the first round of the WEG Trials!
Laura and Cedric went clear in Thursday night's $40,000 USEF WEG
Selection Trial #1, and finished in 8th place overall. Cedric
jumped brilliantly, proving right off the bat that he is a top
contender for the 2010 United States Alltech FEI World Equestrian
Games Team.
Cedric's owner, Peter Wetherill of Happy Hill Farm, sadly passed away last week, giving Laura extra motivation to make it to WEG and do well in his honor. Peter was not just an owner, but a friend to Laura and her team, as well as a longtime US Equestrian supporter. He turned down numerous opportunities from buyers overseas to sell Cedric after he and Laura won the Olympic gold in Beijing in 2008. Laura describes Peter as a 'real patriot. He would have never dreamed of selling one of his horses and having the horse compete for another country. He was all about supporting the United States Team'. The second WEG trial, which runs combined with the $75,000 Fidelity Investments Grand Prix CSI 2*, will take place on Saturday night at 7:00PM. For the live, free webcast of this event, click here. |

Laura and Tortola Victorious in Saturday's $25,000 Suncast 1m50 Classic at WEF 6
On Saturday, Laura and her rising star, Tortola, owned by Beverly
Widdowson, won the $25,000 Suncast 1m50 Classic held in the
Denemethy ring at the sixth week of The Winter Equestrian
Festival.
Out of 26 starters, only two riders, Laura and Peter Charles, advanced on to the jump-off. Laura was first in the ring, and keeping in mind that Peter and his top mount, Murka's Pom D'Ami are known for being fast, she and Tortola sped around the short course, but unfortunately made too tight of turn to a skinny vertical and pulled a rail. Peter Charles, however, rode a bit too conservatively, and left all rails in the cups, but accumulated 5 time faults, keeping Laura in the top position. Congratulations to Laura, Tortola, Beverly Widdowson, and the rest of the team! |
